The fun and magic of natural playscapes never ceases to amaze (and amuse) me. We have a big Community Build playscape project coming up in May at the JCC in York, PA and last weekend we traveled down for a ground breaking ceremony and day of planning and organizing. Do you know about the mummers and the mummers’ parade? Maybe not but here’s the gist: every year in Philadelphia since 1900 there is a wild parade filled with costumes, music and pageantry celebrating the new year. http://phillymummers.com/ Well, lo and behold someone at the York JCC had connections with a Philly mummers club and they were persuaded to come lead a celebratory parade to the ceremonial ground breaking of the new natural playscape. Yeah!We cannot display this gallery
After all the glitter and glam it was then time to get down to business: the big organization day to dot our i’s and cross our t’s and make sure everything is in order for the big upcoming community build. (I wonder if the mummers will be there?) I sprayed out the trike track and various pathways in the yard so we could visualize the space better. Then I met with all the members of the playscape committee (plant committee, volunteer coordinator, food prep person, etc.). Then we moved outside to meet with a whole bunch of builders contracted to construct various bits and pieces of the playscape. (shade sails, water features, climbing equipment, earthmoving, etc. ) It was a glorious 75° spring day and I got my first sunburn of the year. (and it feels so good! back in NY I came home to snow!)
So? Are you going to be near York, PA May 11 – 15th? If so, come by and join the build! Plant a tree! Install a marimba! Build a Playhouse. Sculpt a hill! Or maybe you just want to dress up all wild and crazy and serenade us on your saxophone…..
